The SLSMC: a vast network. a vital link

Opened to navigation in 1959, the Great Lakes / St. Lawrence Seaway System has been a vital link in moving goods between the heartland of North America and international markets.

The Seaway System, 3,700 kilometres in length, encompasses the St. Lawrence River and the five Great Lakes, and extends from the Gulf of St. Lawrence at the Atlantic Ocean to the western end of Lake Superior at the twin ports of Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin. Each navigation season, more than 2,500 commercial vessel transits are made through the Seaway System’s locks to call on major U.S. and Canadian ports.

Our role, at the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, is to ensure the safety, reliability and efficiency of this vast transportation route, which is vital to North America’s economy.

At the SLSMC, efficiency goes hand-in-hand with responsibility

The Seaway is an essential part of the North American transportation infrastructure and a lifeline to business with the rest of the world. The Corporation moves an astronomical amount of raw materials and finished cargoes from a vast network of ports to worldwide markets, in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.

We firmly believe that our economic mission can blend harmoniously with our commitment to protecting the environment. In addition to ensuring that the users of the system are well informed and their ships properly equipped to protect land, water and air, we also take great care to minimize our own operational impacts on the land and water we manage.
