MARIA

E-Business Specialist

I was hired as an E-Business Specialist immediately after obtaining my Master’s degree in Computer Science. It was my first work experience in Canada.

My job consists of supporting two websites for the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation: www.greatlakes-seaway.com and www.hwyh2o.com. It offers a great variety, including web server maintenance, system monitoring, system backup, security issues, database administration, java programming, webpage design, web content updating, and email broadcasting.

I work at the head office in Cornwall. This city provides a quality of life I couldn’t find elsewhere. What I like most is the little traffic. It just takes me 10 minutes to get to work, to go shopping, or to go fishing!

ANTHONY

Electrical Engineering Supervisor

My area of responsibility is in Electrical and Operational Technology (OT) for the Welland Canal, spanning from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The SLSMC also serves the Montreal/Lake Ontario region and our head office is located in Cornwall, Ontario.

With technology changing rapidly, we have to learn and adapt quickly, and evaluate how these technologies can be applied to improve operational efficiencies.  One thing I did not realize before I worked here was how much technology is utilized at the SLSMC.

While the sheer magnitude of the flight locks is inspiring to watch, there is a significant amount of technology behind the operational systems as well. That is what makes it exciting and interesting for the OT team!

In addition, our flight locks allow the SLSMC to harness a tremendous amount of water flow to our generating station which produces our own hydroelectric power for the Welland Canal and are completely energy self-sufficient.

What I have learned upon joining the SLSMC is that it is a tremendous opportunity to make a significant impact, not just on the marine industry but on the environment as a whole. It's a dynamic workplace, and there is never a dull moment!

NANCY

General Manager Safety and Operational Services

I've joined the SLSMC as a manager. This career opportunity caught my attention as it was in an area I was not familiar with and for a position with vast opportunities.

It allowed me to work in each one of the three administrative regions of the organization. The experience was very rewarding both professionally and personally.  As someone who likes to be challenged and learn new things, the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation gives me the diversity I need.

Over the course of my many years with the organization, I have risen through the ranks and gained new knowledge that has served me well in obtaining one of the General Manager positions on the Operations team.
